Dining Out: The Druid

For over twenty years of my life, my father worked in an office in Inman Square in Cambridge. When I moved there after graduating from college, he gave me several recommendations for places to eat, drink and hang out. One of his top picks was The Druid on Cambridge Street.

I have been to The Druid countless times and have always had a positive experience. When my high school friend suggested we meet there for our dinner date tonight I happily agreed to the plan.

You enter The Druid through a narrow doorway beneath a slightly menacing red, black and gold sign of the Druid himself.

As soon as you enter, the first thing you notice is the two giant ghosts floating over the restaurant. I absolutely LOVE these. They remind me of the ghosts in the movie Casper.

The Druid is a very narrow restaurant with the bar on the left side, tables on the right side and one cozy, big booth in each front window.

When we arrived at 8:00pm several tables were open so we could have our pick. I started the meal with a tall glass of UFO White. I am not much of a beer drinker, but this beer I love.

We perused the menu (also sporting the Druid) and had a tough time deciding between many wonderful sounding entrees.

My dinner date selected the fish and chips. The dish came wrapped in sheets of newspaper that were tied together in a bow on top. When she unwrapped the newspaper the smell of fish and french fries burst right into the air between us. Mmmm, salty.

She said the fish was very lightly battered and super moist. She found her french fries a bit greasy and tapped out early.

I went with the veggie burger. I was deciding between that and a combo of potato leek soup and beefsteak tomato salad. The veggie burger was a very generous portion and quite tasty. I found the french fries to be quite delicious and a perfect compliment to my burger.

What I love about The Druid is how unpretentious it is. Everyone is relaxed, the dim lighting lends itself to a mellow atmosphere, the beer selection is great, the food is good and the waiters and bartenders have Irish accents. What more could a girl ask for?

For those who are interested, The Druid has Irish music nights, plays soccer games on their TVs, has a rather popular trivia night (where my roommates and I once came in 2nd place) and offers Sunday brunch.

Visit The Druid at 1357 Cambridge Street in Inman Square.
