Dining Out: PJ's

The first night of our family vacation my mother asked each of us what our "must do" item was during our 10 day trip. Without hesitation, my little sister answered, "PJ's!" What is PJ's you ask? It is a fried food and ice cream mecca that is quintessential Cape Cod.

Tuesday night the whole family piled into our rental car and headed down Route 6 about fifteen minutes from our house in Truro to PJ's. I noticed immediately that PJ's had a new addition to their sign. It now has a banner that reads "Featured on Food Network's 'The Best Thing I Ever Ate' for our lobster roll." Well then!

The PJ's parking lot was totally full and there was already a line at the ice cream window.

We decided to sit inside and thankfully there were plenty of available seats.

We approached the huge menu, hanging above the cash registers and written in brightly colored chalk on several blackboards. After placing our massive order, we were returned to our seats and waited for our number to be called.

We ordered a side of onion rings for the table and they literally disappeared moments after landing on the table. The whole crew agreed these were the best they've ever had.

My sister, the one most excited for the food adventure, ordered the chicken finger plate - seven chicken fingers and a side of french fries. She was in junk food heaven.

To the right of her, my cousin ordered the fisherman's platter, which is basically every type of fried seafood they offer, all on one plate. I felt full just looking at it!

My dad went for the calamari plate, his favorite Cape Cod delicacy.

Another cousin chose the veggie burger which came on a whole wheat bun and garnished with lettuce and tomato.

I had the vegetarian version of a fried food feast which was a grilled cheese and fried vegetables. The grilled cheese was made with rye bread which was delicious! The fried veggies included broccoli, mushrooms and zucchini and was served with buttermilk ranch for dipping. Holy yum.

My mom, who tries to stay away from fried food, was thrilled with her selection - a Greek salad topped with grilled shrimp. She was so happy they offered non-fried options and said she didn't feel her meal was a consolation at all.

You would think we'd be stuffed after all that, but the dinner was not the main event. We really came for the dip tops.

All of us (except my dad) ordered soft serve ice cream with dip tops. I never order my ice cream in a cone unless it's for this specific purpose. I forgot how incredibly delicious the chocolate shell is!

My dad went a traditional route and ordered coffee ice cream in a dish. He loved it and scraped the bowl clean.

As we were getting ready to clean up and head out (roll home) I noticed that the ice cream cone wrappers said "Joy."

Perfect.
