Dining Out: Tasty Burger

From April 2008 - April 2011 I was lucky enough to work side by side with one of my favorite people from college. After a chance run in one day in the winter of 2008, he was instrumental in bringing me into his PR agency, where we co-edited the agency's blog together and showcased our Wheaton pride. Just before I left the agency for my new job he requested to dine with me during one of my "blog meals." He said he wouldn't rest until I agreed. Well, today we met up for lunch to fulfill that wish.

Earlier this week I emailed him a list of four places I had been wanting to try. With zero hesitation he selected Tasty Burger. I was thrilled with his choice as I had been wanting to check it out since it opened! I even tweeted them a few weeks ago to ensure they had vegetarian options and received a reply back that any style of burger could be made with a veggie patty. Excellent!

We arrived at Tasty Burger at 12:30pm and had to duck inside because it was pouring out. I must admit, I was looking forward to dining on Tasty Burger's patio, but the circumstances did not allow.

Tasty Burger is in a space formerly occupied by a gas station and the layout of the restaurant makes that clear. They have maintained the garage style doors which look out onto Boylston Street.

Tasty Burger is a "seat yourself" establishment and we grabbed a table for two right in the middle of the action. There were tables on either side of us, a large bar against one wall and a pool table in the back left corner. Tasty Burger has one of my favorite decor features - specials in colored chalk on a blackboard. I love this look!

At our table it was impossible to ignore the army of condiments at your service!

Tasty Burger's menu is simple: burgers, hot dogs, salads, sides and shakes. We each ordered the mushroom burger (mine with a veggie patty, his with beef) which comes topped with sauteed mushrooms, Swiss cheese and A-1 steak sauce. The burgers arrived wrapped in paper and served in plastic, red baskets. The baskets reminded me of one of my favorite places from childhood, Captain Frosty's in Dennis on the Cape.

When we opened our burgers, I was pleased to see the ooey gooey cheese melting down the sides.

I must admit, the veggie patty was not the best I have tasted, but the burger toppings and the warm bun made up for the lackluster patty.

To go with our burgers we ordered a side of french fries and a side of onion rings. If ever you can't decided between the two, you can order one side called "the 50/50." Love that!

The onion rings were thin cuts of red onion and the bread coating was delicious. We inhaled them before even touching the fries.

The french fries were thinly cut and perfectly crisp. A valiant competitor against the holy grail, the McDonald's fries.

Though our waitress brought us the check after we finished our lunch, we informed her we actually wanted to see the milkshake menu. Embarrassed, she snatched the check and came back with the menus.

We both decided on the "Green Monster" shake which is a Fenway themed named for a mint chocolate chip shake. It was absolutely fantastic! Tasty Burger has a take-out window and I would not hesitate to do a drive by just for that shake.

In addition to Tasty Burger's fun, 50s style vibe and the superb grub, they also boast a city gem - free, off street parking! Tasty Burger has a lot with about 10 parking spaces which makes dining there an absolute cinch!

I also want to give Tasty Burger props for their website. Many restaurant websites are littered with annoying music, PDF-only menus and make it nearly impossible to find a page with their hours of operation. Tasty Burger's website is one page, clean, easy to read and boasts their signature, retro style. Bravo!

On the next sunny, summer day take your appetite to Tasty Burger! You can find this fast food heaven at 1301 Boylston Street, right behind Fenway Park.
