I loved Emma Stone in "Superbad" so when "Easy A" came out I thought I would see it in the theater. I never made it, but happily rented it from Netflix.
Several of my female friends had recently rented the movie as well and told me it was adorable and that I would love it.
I didn't. Though there were some definite highlights (more on that in a moment) the movie was melodramatic, predictable and honestly, not that funny.
Onto the positive, the opening scene where Emma Stone's Olive spends her whole weekend dancing to "Pocket Full of Sunshine" as it blares from a musical greeting card had me roaring with laughter.
I also loved that Olive wished for a John Hughes movie, happy ending. Don't we all? Her references to Jake in "Sixteen Candles," Bender in "The Breakfast Club" and Lloyd in "Say Anything" made my pre-teen heart swoon all over again.
The best part of the movie was Penn Badgley's character, Todd, standing outside Olive's window, re-enacting the "Say Anything" scene, holding speakers above his head toward her window. Perfect.
"Easy A" is a movie you can easily skip. Instead, rent a John Hughes movie and fall in love all over again.
