Dining Out: Wagamama

Monday night I met one of my favorite girls in Harvard Square for dinner and a catch up session. For years now I had been dying to try Wagamama and she had been and agreed it was a fun choice with lots of vegetarian options.

Wagamama has three Boston locations - Faneuil Hall, Prudential Center and Harvard Square. I was surprised by how beautiful the Harvard Square location is. Even the store front and windows are chic.

We arrived at 6:30pm and were seated right away at one of their long, communal tables. It wasn't too packed so thankfully we still felt like we had our own, personal space.

Our waitress zipped right over and was full of energy. She could tell I was a newbie and was very patient while I read every line of the menu. At my friend's suggestion, I ordered what is called the "Pure Wagamama." It comes with a drink (fruit juice, beer or soda), yasai dumplings and your choice of mayashi soba or yasai yaki soba.

I started with a glass of melon juice which was a mixture of apple, orange and watermelon. It was just the right amount of sweet and very refreshing. My dining companion ordered the raw juice which is carrot, cucumber, tomato, orange and apple. It tasted like liquid salad!

Then the yasai dumplings arrived which are steamed, grilled vegetable dumplings served with a chili, garlic, soy sauce. They were fantastic and vanished in about thirty seconds!

For dinner I chose the yasai yaki soba which is teppan-fried whole wheat noodles with egg, red onion, scallion, garlic, mushrooms, butternut squash, bean sprouts and peppers garnished with sesame seeds, fried shallots, pickled red ginger and cilantro vinegar. Yes, all that fits into one bowl and it was amazing! I couldn't get enough. Sometimes vegetarian dishes can leave you wishing you'd ordered more food, but this was superb. I would go back just to order this dish again.

My dinner date ordered the yasai katsu curry. This dish was recommended to me earlier in the day by a coworker who used to work at this Wagamama location! We figured, we have to try it. The dish is deep-fried slices of panko-coated sweet potato, eggplant and butternut squash served with light curry, sticky rice and mixed greens with house dressing. I had never eaten curry before and I was surprised by how much I liked it. This dish is like tempura on steroids.

Though Wagamama did have a dessert menu (which I found surprising) we opted for a change of venue and asked for the check.

I was pleasantly surprised by all things Wagamama (including how fun it is to say)! The restaurant was beautiful, our waitress was excellent, the food was insanely fresh and delicious and an extremely fair price to boot!

See you again soon, Wagamama.
