Gossip Girl: Sex, Drugs and A Locket

Last night Gossip Girl returned with its first new episode in weeks. Perhaps it was the anticipation, or perhaps the general level of excitement leading up to the new hour, but the episode was a complete let down.

First, the episode centers around Serena and Nate, who are now an item. This is incredibly confusing given all of the past hook ups in the group. New York Magazine's Daily Intel says it best:

"Okay, let's review. First Blair and Nate were dating, then Nate slept with Serena, Blair's best friend. Then Blair and Nate broke up, and Blair slept with Chuck, Nate's best friend, and then the two of them were dating. Meanwhile, Serena was dating Dan, who used to date Vanessa, and then Vanessa started dating Nate, who was also maybe dating Jenny (who was once nearly date-raped by Chuck, who also once nearly date-raped Serena), then they broke up, and Nate starting dating Blair again, and Vanessa slept with Chuck. Now Serena and Dan are brother and sister, Serena and Nate are dating, and Dan is trying to get back together with Vanessa. The only non-incestuous male-female sexual relationship in this peer group that has not been exploited is that of Blair and Dan. They're going to have to do that soon, or else they're going to have to start turning people gay."

Despite not knowing if I should root for Serena and Nate or not, I will say those two have chemistry. That coat room make out was hot, hot, HOT.

Also on the couple front, Blair tries to support Chuck as he drives himself insane working to track down the woman he believes is his mother. While she adamantly denies the connection, Blair wears her down as only the Queen Bee can. Minus several fashion points for Blair wearing nothing but black sequins all night.

On a lame note, Jenny is still chasing Damien, the Dutch drug dealer. I hate this story line. Can we move on? The only thing I might have hated more was her spider web dress and grossly off color pink lipstick. Double fail.

Speaking of hating, Dan was hating himself for confessing his love to Vanessa, who is now ignoring him. Additionally, Rufus is ignoring Lily (despite her hair looking AMAZING) and is taking comfort in the affection from their downstairs neighbors. Oh, Rufus. Naughty, naughty.

This episode three main characters Vanessa, Eric and Dorota were all noticeably absent. Also MIA, Tripp and Maureen, who I guess we are supposed to assume are safely in DC ruining other people's lives.

While this week was a complete snooze, I have high hopes for this "Chuck's mother returns" story line as well as the arrival of Daddy Van Der Woodsen, who is allegedly going to be played by Billy Baldwin.
