Shop: Practical vs. Adorable

Well, its that time of year again. Time to dust off the box that holds your gloves, scarves and hats and move your winter coat from a hanger inside the closet to the coat rack. I know, I'm depressed too.

The trickiest question for a cold climate enduring fashionista is - do I buy a practical coat that will keep me warm and minimize my complaining, or do I purchase something fabulous based on the fact that I will have to wear it nearly every day for the next eight months? Beauty is pain, right?

The superb style editors at one of my favorite websites, The Frisky, have been kind enough to present us with options that straddle the line between practical and adorable. Of their top eleven picks, here are my top five winners:

With a twist on the typical belted trench coat, Express offers a fun patterned fabric, yet the black and white keeps the look formal enough for a dressy night out or work event:

TopShop also puts a spin on the basic trench by supersizing the collar which adds instant drama and adding a thick, black ribbon for a belt, which pumps up the volume:

If you decide warmth is the number one priority, Bloomingdales is selling this Laundry by Shelli Segal coat that is down, yet is fitted at the waist and has a feminine fur accent framing the hood of the coat. Careful before you fall in love, this one will break the bank!'

This coat may be my favorite variation on a down jacket. The charcoal gray color is very chic, the large collar almost distracts the eye from realizing the coat is down, and the belt with the tie to the side makes for a feminine shape not typically found in down, puffy jackets. Bravo, Alloy!

Lastly, this coat is not functional, but dear lord is it fashionable! The cape-like accents over the shoulders are very unique and the fitted chest and waist of the coat offer a strong, but feminine silhouette. The cut on the bottom of the coat is also interesting. A coat so divine could only be from one place - Anthropologie.

Thank you to the ladies at The Frisky for showing us fashion doesn't have to mean sacrificing function and for getting us excited about buttoning up a winter coat!

If these choices seem more fashionista than recessionista, remember, there is always Santa ;)
