Dining Out: Piattini

Last week marked my 25th birthday (eeek!) and I was searching for a place to have my celebratory dinner. As a Boston native all 24 years of my life, and a serious foodie, I've become a bit fatigued with the local dining scene. I was struggling to choose a location I hadn't already been to several times. I wanted delicious food, a nice ambiance, but prices that wouldn't completely break the bank.

I had been brainstorming possible dinner spots for about a week when I was walking on Newbury Street and noticed Piattini. Although I had never been, I recognized the name from a rave review given by one of my college roommates.

When my birthday finally arrived, I announced to my two dinner dates - I'd love to try Piattini! So we put on our best Newbury Street outfits and went to toast to 25.

Piattini is right on Newbury Street between Exeter and Fairfield Streets. The restaurant has a beautiful outdoor patio, as well as seating inside. This night we ate indoors (due to wind). Although the tables are close together, the noise level is tolerable and the atmosphere is warm. Each table is delivered a basket of delicious bread with olive oil to enjoy while you peruse the menu.

Piattini's menu is Italian and serves mostly small plates. We each ordered two small plates for our meal. In round one we had eggplant with smoked mozzarella and sundried tomatoes in a truffle cream sauce and a caprese of mozzarella, tomato and basil.

For round two we had spinach gnocchi was pesto cream sauce, butternut squash ravioli with apple cider, brown sugar and sage, and lobster ravioli served with a lobster cream sauce. Can you feel your waist line growing?

To top it off we split a piece on the dessert special - a light but decadent chocolate cake. Piattini is known as a wine bar, so we also had a bottle of white from a label called Evolution that was sweet and complimented our food perfectly.

The service at Piattini was outstanding and the prices are incredibly reasonable for a neighborhood with such high rent (and high fashion).

If you are tired of tapas, but love the idea of small plates, Piattini offers delectable Italian food in manageable portions. Everything on the menu was lick-your-plate delicious. The restaurant is perfect for a date, a night out with the girls, or even a meal with your parents when they come to town.

Thanks Piattini for a Happy Birthday to me!
