Dining Out: Boston Burger Company

Last night I went with two of my former college roommates to check out the new burger joint in Davis Square in Somerville called Boston Burger Company. From the outside, you would expect the Boston Burger Company to have a counter against the window with stools, but serve mostly take out. When we walked in, I was surprised to see the place was sit down.

We were greeted by a hostess who sat us immediately at a comfy table for four. The restaurant has about 10 tables in all, with plenty of space between each, and a large aisle down the middle. For a small space, it actually feels quite roomy. The walls have black chalk boards that display the burger choices in brightly colored chalk, as well as flat screen TVs on both sides of the restaurant (its Boston, we have to see our sports teams at all times). In lieu of the traditional menu books, the menu is actually printed on the table place mats.

Our waitress was extremely friendly, and willing to answer questions about the menu and offer her personal recommendations. We started the evening with an appetizer of macaroni and cheese bites. These are balls of Kraft macaroni and cheese, battered and fried, and served with marinara sauce. Need I say more?

With over 20 types of burgers to choose from, we were a tad overwhelmed! I wound up choosing the Alpine Burger (mushrooms and swiss), while my dining companions ordered the Pilgrim (the entire Thanksgiving feast on the burger) and the Bruschetta (self explanatory). Each burger comes with house made potato chips and your choice of coleslaw or beans.

Since we were unaware that the burger came with two sides, we ordered sweet potato fries for the table. They were the perfect level of crispiness. When I asked our waitress for mustard, she replied, "Would you like spicy, honey, or classic yellow?" Well gee, gatekeeper to the land of opportunity, I just don't know! Three kinds of mustard? I think I've died and gone to condiment heaven.

All of the food we ordered was fantastic, the service was outstanding, and the furniture/decor was surprisingly upscale for a burger place in a college town. Adding to my emerging love affair, is the fact that any burger on the menu can be ordered as a turkey burger or a veggie burger! Calorie counters and vegetarians rejoice!

Look out McDonalds, because I'm lovin it.
